After the rigours of my Lapland trip in May-June 23 (which with near 24 hours of daylight and 2,000+ kms of driving proved an amazing but somewhat exhausting experience!) I took things a bit more easily during the summer, apart from an old university reunion week in September. Though the autumn was quiet for migrants in Norfolk the winter partly made up for it with Waxwings and Short-eared Owls keeping me well occupied! I also got to see Tom Jones live for the first time and was so impressed I booked to see him again at Thetford Forest (along with Bryan Adams) in June 24. On a negative note, though my nightly owl feeding sessions continue to be productive (both for viewers and photographers – see my website) and I still carry on with my full programme of Barn Owl box maintenance and erection, I’ve sadly lost the breeding Barn Owls in my loft space for the time being. Hopefully they’ll return soon once I’ve cleared up after the Jackdaws!

Unusually I also managed two week long winter trips in January and February (to Kikinda in N Serbia for the famous Long-eared Owl roost and Les Baux in the South of France for wintering Wallcreepers and Alpine Accentors). Whilst the Serbian trip proved excellent both for the owls (up to 35 in one small tree and anything up to 2,000 around the town square – where I was interviewed by Serbian TV and have now attained global stardom!) and also concentrations of Hen Harriers locally, the French trip proved rather less so. Not only did we fail to photograph Wallcreeper but our daily slog up steep steps to the old ruined castle that the birds frequented aggravated my already weakened left knee; and to cap it all, virtually all the local restaurants were closed for the winter – so no great gourmet experience either! Another late spring and largely hide-based Spanish trip for Montagu’s Harrier, Goshawk, sandgrouse, Stone-Curlew etc beckons as I write, together with another reunion in Cumbria in September. I’m still on the NHS waiting list for a hand operation which is likely to incapacitate me for up to two weeks during which I won’t be able to drive and will probably require help dressing and undressing - but I can’t say I’m expecting too many volunteers!
