As some may be aware, early January 2023 saw me driving to Wex Photographic in Norwich to pick up the much lauded Olympus Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 lens with built-in 1.25 converter which I’d been patiently awaiting for ten months to complete the full changeover to the Olympus micro four thirds system which I’d read and been told so much about by a number of recent converts (many previously diehard Nikon users like myself). Following a couple of mainly hide-bound photo trips the previous year (to Spain and Hungary) I was convinced of the need for a good, lightweight zoom combined with the quietness and AF speed of a mirrorless system; and the Nikon option was both incredibly expensive and far too heavy for my purposes - so it was really no contest!

Whilst it’s been a steep learning curve and I still struggle on occasions and end up zooming the wrong way the new system has so far acquitted itself pretty well during the winter period in Norfolk and also on another largely hide orientated Spanish trip from late April to mid-May specialising in Great and Little Bustards, three vulture species and Golden and Bonelli’s Eagle (with Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Golden Oriole, Wryneck and Dupont’s Lark an added bonus!). The real test will be during an imminent (as I write) two week trip to Lapland - made possible only by finally venturing down the equity release path. Hopefully I’ll survive long enough to enjoy some of the proceeds!
