Post-pandemic, mid 21-22 saw some sort of return to normality – with foreign travel once again on the agenda. After somewhat of a false start in March 22 when a hide based trip to Spain to photograph special birds like Golden Eagle and Goshawk had to be cut short because of torrential rain (just when Norfolk was bathed in glorious sunshine and balmy temperatures!) an excellent and very productive ten day photo safari in Hungary in May (again largely hide-based for species like woodpeckers, Hawfinch, Roller, Bee-eater and Red-footed Falcon), followed by our re-scheduled Spanish trip in late June (by then also incorporating sandgrouse hides) helped make up for a disappointing winter (too mild) and spring migration (lack of easterlies) in Norfolk. A possible change of kit currently beckons and the new Olympus OM1 and 150-400mm lens with built-in 1.25 converter is looking increasingly attractive – both on weight and performance grounds, whilst still giving me comparable image size to my Nikon set-up but without having to lug around nearly five kilos and putting extra strain on my increasingly arthritic body parts (which now require regular monthly osteo visits to be freed up – one of the many joys of turning 70!). Fortunately I can now enjoy music again – with Queen and Adam Lambert, Bryan Adams and George Thorogood and the Destroyers all pencilled in for summer 22. The Barn Owls in my loft space currently have four healthy chicks and the nightly owl feeding and photography sessions (which offer unrivalled opportunities to observe both Barn and Tawny Owls at point-blank range) are proving increasingly popular - especially since Mike Lane’s You-Tube posting ‘Photographing Owls at Night with Richard Brooks’. If nothing else it helps offset the swingeing rise in utility bills we all now face; and don’t even get me started on diesel prices!
