In common with probably the vast majority of the British public, I’d have to admit that the last twelve months have not ranked highly in my list of personal favourites! In fact, I’d go as far as to say that my largely solitary existence for much of that period would have been really difficult to get through without my twin passions for nature and wildlife photography; and like many others I suspect, I’ve come to appreciate more than ever the restorative powers of being able to commune more fully with the natural world; and with far fewer people and minimal traffic around some of my regular North Norfolk haunts during lockdown I was really able to savour the true wildlife experience in ways that otherwise simply wouldn’t have been possible and was also permitted to carry on with my winter owl box maintenance programme in a socially distanced manner. Of course, I missed socializing, live music and going out for the odd beer or two; and it was unfortunate that lockdown coincided with yet another milestone birthday which I was unable to share with anyone other than a picture of my dear departed Mum! However, compared to those who lost family or loved ones to covid or ended up losing their jobs or livelihood I came out of it relatively unscathed and have just returned from a much needed break with fellow photographer and travelling companion Bill to North Uist and later Speyside – our first trip since November 19! Here’s finally hoping for some sort of return to near normality (covid variants permitting) and hopefully this calendar may have highlighted some of the lighter moments of lockdown.
