Owl Boxes

How would you like to play a small part in the conservation of this iconic species? Following the accelerating pace of barn conversions and the decay of redundant farm buildings favoured by barn owls (combined with a dramatic loss of their former nest sites in hollow trees) nest boxes now afford them the best refuge. If you think you may have a building with potential (ideally wooden beams or ledges) in a suitable location please feel free to contact me. A small open cart-shed or even a modern building may well be adequate if the surrounding habitat suits them.

I would be happy to come out and advise and (if I felt the location was right) supply and erect a box (ideally two to minimise competition and increase the chances of usage) from my stock of recycled tea chests. I have been doing this since the mid 1990's and now have over 760 throughout North Norfolk sustaining 100+ breeding pairs in a good year and providing countless roosting sites. Prices vary, depending on distance (ideally a 25 mile radius of Fakenham) and ease of access and installation, but start at around £50 per box (which I can then maintain and monitor for a small annual fee). A-frame exterior boxes are also an option but clearly will not last as long and the cost to supply and install one (which involves two people) would be around £175. Finally, if you have any surplus tea chests lurking in your loft or garage please bear me in mind - I can assure you they will be put to good use!

Please contact me if you can help.
