The year got off to a good start with a return to Kikinda in N Serbia in late Jan for Long-eared Owls and Hen Harriers, which we were lucky enough to film during a brief period of snow cover (along with obliging Red Squirrel). This was followed by a return to Lesvos in mid-April for the first time in 16 years - an interesting experience chronicled in my October 26 article in ‘Birdwatch’ magazine. I was hoping my return in early May would coincide with the arrival of some of the summer 25 prospectors to my Swift boxes (now numbering 19 after having a further two fitted to my chimney-breast in the hope of attracting some high flyers!). Sadly they showed only minimal interest - though breeding in good numbers at several nearby sites; so maybe next year? Similar disappointment applied in the case of the resident Barn Owl in my loft, who managed to attract a mate in March for the first time in two years. Regrettably she proved fickle, and departed after a week - ironic in what proved to be a bumper breeding season for the species in Norfolk (with several broods of five and even six and close on 100 of my boxes occupied!). In spite of the summer drought I achieved the best ever floral display in my garden tubs (see picture) through feeding and regular watering until it was wrecked by a freak hailstorm in mid-August! After a minor health scare back in June necessitating a colonoscopy (which fortunately proved negative) and losing a good friend of 70 odd years to dementia I resolved to continue travelling while I still can; so to that end I’m off to Tarifa in Sept for a week of raptor migration round the Straits of Gibraltar and just hoping the wind will blow in the right direction. As always I live in hope!
